When the moon met the sun.

When the sun and moon met.

There is no hostility or animosity between them, they will never become one, but will continue to orbit the earth forever.

This is a dances about this concept, using sword and fan.

The highlight is not the handling of the sword as a combat technique, but the colorful trajectory of the sword drawn by Taro and Maki.

Japanese Poem

2nd. Shiro-Yama 城山

Japanese Poem

A battle scene in which the famous samurai “Takamori Saigo” is getting through a hopeless situation with his sword style “Jigen-ryu” of swordsmanship. This song is very popular because it shows in his last moments in solitude and serenity.

<Solitary struggle, and break through the encirclement to  return>

(Kogun hunto kakomi wo yabutte kaeru)

<For a hundred Miles I’ve fought through beyond the enemies Walls and fortress.>

(Ippyakun no ritei ruiheki no kan)

<My sword is already broken, my horse is dead.>

<However now I feel the autumn breeze  from mountain of my hometown.

That wind made me decide to die quietly here.>

(Syuhu hone wo uzumu, kokyo no yama )

In 1877, the era of the samurai is coming to an end.
Here is a samurai who had also lost the war and was facing his final moments.

Surrounded by enemies, Takamori Saigo, a samurai, overcomes many forts with all his might to reach his hometown. His sword is broken, his horse has fallen, and there is nothing more he can do.

Saigo felt as if the cool autumn breeze blowing into his hometown comforted him and said, “home. You fought bravely to the end.” Choosing his place and time to die by himself, Saigo ended his life as a samurai in peace.

3rd. Tomoe and Yoshinaka

On the battlefield 900 years ago; the samurai lady “Tomoe” wants to die together with her lover “Yoshinaka” ,but he tells her to keep on living.

This dance is an episode from the old Japanese military tale “The Tale of the Heike.”

About 900 years ago, Tomoe, a female samurai, had a lover, Yoshinaka, who has been in love with her since childhood. However, the two samurai get separated on the battlefield. The battle is very much to their disadvantage. Tomoe wants to fight and die alongside her Yoshinaka. However, Yoshinaka’s wish for Tomoe is to live on. He knows he can’t protect her in this fight. He asks her to run away, saying, “It’s a shame for a man not to be able to protect a woman.”

Tomoe struggled from two different position; a soldier and his lover, but in order to protect the wishes and pride of her beloved Yoshinaka, she decides to follow his wishes. Finally, Tomoe wants to have a one-on-one combat with the enemy’s famous military commander. As if to tell his Yoshinaka, “Don’t forget me!”, She boldly announces her name and defeats the enemy military commander. Then she takes off her armor and runs off, turning her back on the battlefield and Yoshinaka.

Tomoe chose to fight as a samurai and to live for Yoshinaka as a woman.

4th. The battle of “Tiger & Dragon”

Japanese Poetry

The samurai were called the Dragon and the Tiger, and they continued to fight for 10 years.

<Uesugi Kenshin and his troops crossed the river on horseback late at night, so quietly that not even the crack of a whip could be heard.>

(Bensei Syuku syuku  Yoru Kawa wo Wataru)

<When dawn broke, Takeda Shingen and his troops were surprised to find a large number of enemies with flying flags in front of their troops.>

(Akatsuki ni Miru  Senpei no Taiga wo Yousuru wo)

<For more than decade, Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen had a great worth of grudges against each other.  They had been polishing their swords and improving themselves to defeat the rival. >

(Ikon nari Jyu nen  Ikken wo Migaki)

<However, as the Kenshin’s sword swung down with great force like a shooting star, his hateful enemy Shingen runs off swiftly like a long snake.>

(Ryuusei Koutei Tyouda wo Issu)

This is one of the most famous Kenbu pieces.

The story expresses the battle between medieval samurai Uesugi Kenshin and his rival Takeda Shingen, which lasted more than 10 years.

In just two minutes, the battle scenes and emotional expressions are into the poetry and moving, making it a well-balanced composition for understanding sword dance.

Fans are used to express things like horses, the sun, and flags, and once you understand that the dance is created like a language, the sword dance will feel like a short opera.
